Aquarium Chillers - When to Use Them.

Aquarium chillers are often needed when running a marine aquarium in order to reduce the ambient temperature of the water, especially during the warmer summer months if you have cold water fish.

There are 2 types of aquarium water chillers :

•  Drop-in, and

•  In-line chillers.

Drop-in aquarium chillers are extremely simple and work by having coils that you simply place in the sump and act to reduce the surrounding water temperature.

In-line aquarium chillers are slightly different in that they have internal cooling coils. In order words, they work by pumping the tank water through the coil where is it cooled and then returned to the tank at the lower temperature. While this sounds more complicated there is one advantage in using an in-line chiller over the drop-in variety and that is the 'in-line' chillers can be used externally. In other words you do not have to place them anywhere near the vicinity of the tank removing the need to have unsightly looking equipment near the tank. You can put the chiller in another room or in a cupboard the choice is yours.

In order to use an aquarium water chiller , however, a device called a 'temperature controller' is necessary. Again there are 2 types of controllers:

•  Single stage controllers which only control the chiller, or

•  Dual stage controllers which can manage BOTH an aquarium chiller and heater. The advantage of these controllers is that they can minimize any large fluctuations in temperature.

There are many types of aquarium chillers on the market. Some of the more popular types are listed below (the features have been listed underneath):

1. Aquamedic Titan Series

•  Super-consistent ±1° F differential

•  Simple keypad programming

•  Celsius or Fahrenheit scale

•  Electronic LCD temperature controller

•  Constant tank temperature readout

•  Suitable for all saltwater or fresh water applications

•  Heat exchanger made from salt water proof titanium

•  Compact design

•  Extremely Low Noise Level - Constructed for optimum noise reduction

2. The TECLIMA 'CA' Chillers / Heaters (Liquid Conditioners) are marketed by the company as "the newest line of upscale marine and freshwater equipment from Italy ". These all-in-one units provide precise digital thermostatic regulation of both the refrigeration and heating of the water. Furthermore, these units require little consumption of energy and are extremely quiet to operate. Refrigeration and heating of various liquids including salt water

•  30% more compact than equivalent models

•  Quick, easy adjustable temperature controls

•  Reduced noise during operation

•  Uses standard 5/8" ID tubing

•  ABS housing

•  Discreet and stylist which will blend with most decors.

•  In-line heater/chiller unit

•  Non-corrosive & non-toxic interior thus able to withstand the most chemically antagonistic of liquids

•  Digital thermostat-thermometer with "neutral zone" for reading and checking both cooling and heating temperatures

•  For use in both marine & freshwater with no contact between liquids to be treated, metal materials and heating resistor

•  Aquarium Chiller

•  Energy efficient

•  Easy to install

•  1 year Manufacturer Warranty: From the date of purchase.
